‘Out of my mind’ is a page-turner novel about a girl named Melody that faces lots of challenges from her Cerebral Palsy. At school,Melody faces being kept in a room full of disabled children, teachers who treat her like a kindergarten child, terrible ‘inclusion classes’, and trying out for the quiz team.In the end, will Melody get in the quiz team?Or will she get blamed or left out from some events?
Melody is a eleven-year-old girl who is kind and very resilient.Other people think Melody is ‘not smart’ just because she is disabled.Who would have known she was smarter than all the other ‘normal’ children?Melody can get very angry sometimes, just like her mother. Melody has done a good job at fitting in at school, especially in inclusion classes.
There are lots of themes in this book. One theme, which Sharon Draper did very well on, was clues. With clues, you would really want to read on.Another theme was disabilities.Melody had lots of disabilities, but she also had some abilities that most normal children didn’t have. One of these abilities was remembering more things then normal children could.
Even though ‘Out Of My Mind’ was sometimes sad, it was still a wonderful page-turner that would keep someone wondering what would happen for days.I strongly recommend it to people who like adventure and are bored.
