Book Week!

This term in library, we have judged books that were shortlisted for the Eve Pownall Award 2018. All the books include lots of information and most of them are based on non-fiction.

Things that make a good information book are:

  • Lots of information
  • Suitable and Appropriate pictures
  • Contrast between colours
  • Appropriate colours

My favourite short-listed book was ‘The Happiness Box’ because there were attractive visuals and    detailed information. The book was also presented in a interesting manner, with a picture of the actual hand-written book attached at the end.

What was your favourite book? And why?

Amazing camp at Sovereign Hill

I had a really good time at Sovereign Hill Camp in Ballarat.

On the first day, we went to a museum first and did some activities. There was touch screens, voting, drawing, and other things. We even got to see the actual Eureka flag! After, we went back on the bus and once we got to where we were staying, we had lunch. For the rest of the day, we had free time across Sovereign Hill. During this time, I felt excited to see things sacred to the battle and learned a lot about Eureka history and what happened after the stockade. When we got to Sovereign Hill, we had free time across the museum to do some of our research. After dinner, we found out who was sharing a cabin with us. When I got to bed, I couldn’t wait until tomorrow!

The next day, everyone of year 5 got to be ‘part of the museum’. We first dressed into 1850 costumes and after a tour of the museum, we went to the school we were ‘attending’. It was very enjoyable listening to the teacher make up things as excuses or people. At school, we also got to learn things we don’t usually get to learn, such as sewing (for the girls) and drawing (for the boys). It was extremely wonderful when I saw my normal teacher dress up as the confectioner and another teacher from my school dress up as a worker from the clothing store. After school, we got to have free time and I could finish my research. After dinner, we went back to our cabins to prepare for the Aura Light Show.

The Aura Light Show was very enjoyable. There was 3 parts to it and all were equally amazing. The first part was a 3d explanation of how the galaxy was formed. It showed earth’s past and how gold was formed. The second part was outside. We went on a glowing train to get to the right destination. When we got to there, there was a story of bungle the eagle for us to watch. Next, we walked to a theatre where it opens to a outside stage. This part shows what happened in the 1854s, Ballarat.

The next day was our last. We had school, but instead of staying in the classroom all day, we went to different types the shops, such as the blacksmith, the confectionery, and some more. After school, we went to have one last look at Sovereign Hill and switched out of our costumes. We thanked Ma’am (the teacher) and headed to the bus.

Sovereign Hill is a great place to go to camp.

Would you want to attend costumed schools?
